Apollo Explore eScooter Review & Overview
Before starting our 2020 Apollo Explore review, here’s a brief overview covering a few of the key features mentioned above. With such a reliable range & top speed offered from this mid-spec monster, casual riders & commuters alike will find both fun & functionality. Although a little heavier and more expensive than the Apollo City & aptly named “Light“, the performance is well worth the price. Alongside this, all of Apollo’s models boast brilliant build quality; placing such confidence as to offer a 2 year warranty for all official purchases. Following suit, all models also offer varying degrees of water resistance, with the Explore as no exception. Lastly, keeping this superb scooter in shape should pose no issue, thanks to the 7-days a week support offered by their team. Discover all of the features included in detail below; starting with speed, power and distance.
Speed, Power & Distance
Starting off our 2020 Apollo Explore review with speed, power & distance. Much like many of their models, this scooter surely packs a punch; with a 1000W motor propelling riders to speeds of up to 31 mp/h, with a peak output of 1400W. Generating this amount of power off a single motor is impressive, however we were even further excited to experience the decent 34 mile range. This range should prove more than enough for most casual riders & commuting eScooter users alike.
Furthermore, the Explore offers awesome acceleration, reaching 0-15 mp/h in just 3.5 seconds; perfect for any getaways or drag races. Alongside this, riders will also enjoy a terrific level of torque, allowing you to tackle inclines of up to 20 degrees. This hill climbing capacity should prove more than enough for most, unless you plan on riding over a few mountains. Pick between 3 gear modes, each offering varying levels of power output to match your needs. Each gear offers between 15, 25 & 31 mp/h max. speeds respectively; perfect for matching speed limits, whilst also helping meet the requirements of most riders.
How fast does it go?
31 mp/h (50 km/h). Please note that variables such as rider weight, terrain, incline, etc. will affect overall performance.
Much like most models, Apollo Scooters state that the Explore best suits riders between the ages of 18 to 60 years. With such speed, power & range offered, it’s clear this is a mid-tier eScooter intended for both utility & fun. As such, we find this age range as no surprise, especially considering the slightly above average weight & potent power offered. In terms of maximum/recommended loads, this model supports weights of up to 265 lbs (120 kg) whilst weighing 52 lbs (23kg); approx. 5 times its own weight.
What is the range/distance?
34 miles (54 km).
Battery Life & Charging
Bringing this 2020 Apollo Explore review onto battery life & charging. One thing Apollo seem very proud of is their use of Dynavolt cells; leading manufacturers of motorcycle batteries. After extensive testing between LG & Dynavolt, its revealed that the latter performs better for longer. Each battery sourced from Dynavolt expects to perform until approx. 2600 charge cycles; offering up to 6 years of daily usage. The use of these top quality Li-ion cells should give riders some quality assurance, alongside better battery performance. These Lithium-ion batteries are known for higher efficiency, longer life and lighter weight than their counterparts.
This 52V 18.2aH battery further features a smart power management system; helping prevent common faults like over/under voltage, overcharge, over-current, short circuiting and much more. Thanks to this large capacity, this model is able to offer its remarkable range. This model also includes regenerative braking, converting kinetic energy from braking into battery power; further adding to total range and helping squeeze out that extra few hundred metres or mile. Whilst the 9 hour charge time is a little lengthy, riders can utilise a fast charger and effectively halve charge time. Apollo batteries also come with 2 years warranty, cited as the longest warranty coverage on any eScooter available, showcasing their confidence in quality control.
How long does it take to charge?
Approx. 9 hours (4-5 with fast charger)
Battery protection & safety
Firstly, a power management system is featured; helping protect against common battery faults. These faults include short circuits, over-discharging, temperature regulation, over-current, overcharge and much more. With the battery further integrated within the frame, slight bumps and hits won’t deal any damage. This model also claims a waterproof rating of IP54, helping protect against dust ingress and moderate-pressure water blasts; effectively keeping your battery safe from mother nature. However, we don’t recommend submerging or riding for extended periods in torrential rain.
How long will the battery last for?
Most standard Li-ion batteries typically last between 500-1000+ charge cycles before any issues arise. However, Apollo utilise premium quality Li-ion cells were sourced from Dynavolt, known as leading manufacturers of motorcycle batteries. Surprisingly, these batteries perform better than LG counterparts, with greater efficiency & longer life. These tests concluded that riders should expect an astounding average of 2600 charge cycles before any issues arise. For perspective, even if you were using & charging your eScooter daily, it would still take ~6 years to reach this point; one of the longest life batteries on any scooter we’ve reviewed.
Design and Ergonomics
Delivering our 2020 Apollo Explore review onto its next section, design & ergonomics. Following suit with the rest of the range, the Apollo Explore remains fully folding, further featuring a forged aluminium frame; aiding in reducing weight and increasing durability. This fully folding frame makes packing, transporting and stowing your ride quick, compact & easy, perfect for commuters. The build quality of this ride is great, riders can take a few small hits and crashes without any denting or warping of the frame, which proves solid. Apollo further offer up to 2 years warranty, protecting you against any faults whilst also guaranteeing quality. Cruise control makes long-distance rides a joy, whilst also avoiding any hand cramps or strain. Front, rear, stem & deck LED lighting is a great feature, offering more visibility than most models; of which we discuss in greater detail in our safety & roadside use section.
A clear & conveniently situated LED display showcases speed, distance, battery and more, alongside allowing riders to change gear modes & other settings. Many competitors have a problem of making the display too complicated, however Apollo seems to have taken an effective minimalist approach. The suspension is far superior to competitors, which we discuss more of in our build quality section. To further attest to the strength of its design, the Apollo Explore supports weights of up to 265 lbs (120 kg) whilst weighing 52 lbs (23kg); approx. 5 times its own weight. All in all, this model offers a pleasant journey. The 9″ deck is spacious enough to comfortably manoeuvre around on, with cruise control removing the strain of long distances. The design includes host of features and offers high-spec performance for the price. Learn more about this eScooter in the rest of our Apollo Explore review for 2020.

Build quality and ease of use
Moving our 2020 Apollo Explore review onto build quality & ease of use. As previously mentioned, this model offers a brilliant build quality, even offering up to 2 years warranty on all official purchases; showcasing the confidence Apollo have in their products. All materials used are clearly of high quality, especially the Dynavolt Li-ion cells. 10″ pneumatic tires offer greater grip and some degree of shock absorption, however remain susceptible to puncturing. The forged aluminium frame can handle a few harsh hits and bumps without warping or denting. The front & rear hydraulic disc brakes allow for some serious stopping power, which we discuss in our safety section. Regardless, the inclusion of regenerative braking is also another high-spec feature not often seen in this price range.
Dual spring suspension ensures superiority over the majority of competitors, also allowing for a sensationally smooth ride. The smart power management system ensures protection against any battery faults, with the Li-ion cells sourced from world-renowned Dynavolt. With an IP54 water resistance rating, your ride is safe from the elements; protecting against dust ingress & moderate sustained water pressure. With 7-days a week support, riders should have no trouble keeping their scooter in shape. As briefly mentioned, this strong scooter supports approx. 5 times its own weight of 23 kg. For a mid-budget scooter, we were nicely surprised with the build quality. Discover more about this exciting eScooter below, in our safety & roadside use section.
Safety and usability on the road
Switching to the most important section of our 2020 Apollo Explore eScooter review; safety & usability on the road. Much like all their models, the Explore further features dual spring suspension, smoothing out any harsh hits and bumps you may encounter; greatly improving rider comfort, control and safety. This, coupled with 10″ pneumatic tires aids in ensuring a silk-smooth ride; however, air-filled pneumatic tires still remain susceptible to puncturing. Front & rear hydraulic disc brakes also offer some incredible stopping power, with a total stopping distance of 8 ft (2.45m) from top speed; which should prove more than enough braking power for most sudden stops. Thanks to an IP54 waterproof rating, worry not over exposed electrical components, faults or electrocution. This, further coupled with a smart power management system ensures that no cable is ever compromised.
In terms of roadside use, this model was clearly designed for roadside use only, sorely lacking off-road functionality. Apollo themselves state its intended roadside use, stating that the best terrains are asphalt, pavement, roads, etc. The 3 gear modes is also a great feature for roadside riding, aiding in following speed limits and learning the ropes. Give your wrist a rest on longer journeys with cruise control, which also adds to its capacity as a commuting eScooter. Most importantly, the Apollo Explore includes integrated front, rear stem & deck LED lighting; ensuring you stay seen and safe, whatever the hour. However, we still insist riders wear adequate safety gear when riding on the road or at night, including a high-visibility jacket, gloves, helmet, etc.
Is the Apollo Explore waterproof?
Yes – the Apollo Explore eScooter claims a waterproof rating of IP54, protecting it against dust ingress & moderate water pressure. Learn more about IP ratings here.
